Good Samaritan Education Student Leadership Camp
On the first weekend of November 2013, students in leadership positions from seven Good Samaritan Education schools gathered at the Elanora Conference Centre for the GSE Student Leadership Camp. Students from St Mary’s, St Patrick’s, St Scholastica’s, Rosebank, Stella Maris, Mount St Benedict and Santa Maria College from Melbourne were represented.
Five captains from each school came together and made presentations introducing their school and how their leadership structure works. For the next two days we went on to have sessions about the different leadership styles at our schools, and explored the different Benedictine values. We also had guests come from the different schools, including the recently retired MSB school captain Rhiannon Toohey and 2011 MSB Captain Gabby Haradine. They spoke to us about the different aspects involved in leadership and some of the challenges we will face and ways to get over them. Ms Carolyn Collins from Stella Maris College gave up some tips about planning and Mrs Sue Lennox, the principal from St Patrick’s College spoke about the challenges of leadership and answered a lot of our questions.
From all the sessions, the thing I took away most were the people I met; having bonded over cards and intense volleyball games we also shared ideas on events that we could hold and different leadership tactics. The camp was an amazing experience and one I recommend for future captains to go on.
